Hawkins Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity International was established in Americus, GA by Millard and Linda Fuller in 1973.

The history of Hawkins Habitat for Humanity, an affiliate of HfHI, dates back to February 17th. 1992.

That was the time when Jeff Campbell, Maurice DeWitte, Don Freeman, David Hale, Karen Halstead, Marge Lockhart, Doc McConnell, Steven Nelson, Ann Newton, Jim Point, Eileen Queenor, and Rick Witowski all held the position of faith; "that all of God's people should have a decent affordable place to live in."

What is Habitat?

Habitat for Humanity is an international organization, thus we have affiliates all over the world that hold the excellent distinction of being the largest builder of family homes around the globe.

It is a an independent, non profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry that partners with people of all beliefs.

Habitat for Humanity isn't just about building and providing affordable housing, it's also about build lives. It's about people! It's about families! It's about getting you involved!

What Does it Do?

Habitat for Humanity builds simple, decent, affordable, energy efficient houses, in partnership (homeownership means that you help build your house or work on someone else's) with those in need. It turns hope into homes! We make decent housing affordable!

Houses are built using community volunteers that perform the labor, both skilled and non-skilled. They are the people that get something done!

These house are then sold to pre qualified and trained homeowner applicants on a 20 - 30 year no interest mortgage for the cost of construction of the house. This is done on a first mortgage. A 20 - 30 year, forgiven, second mortgage is then applied to cover the free labor invested by the community. This second mortgage covers the difference between actual construction cost and appraised value of the house. This second mortgage also prevents the new homeowner from making a big profit at the expense of the community volunteer or Habitat for Humanity. Monthly mortgage payments are used to build additional houses!

Habitat for Humanity is not a giveaway organization, but it's goal is to eliminate poverty housing and build lives. We believe that homeownership is in the nation's best interest, through making decent shelter a matter of conscience and action, because it brings stability to families, vitality to distressed neighborhoods, and overall economic growth. Remember, these low income homeowners become tax paying citizens!

Good things begin to happen in people's lives when you "address" them. Habitat for Humanity is making possible the possibility for low income people to finally realize the American dream!

Who can Apply?

Hawkins Habitat for Humanity builds houses in partnership with low income people in Hawkins and Hancock counties of East Tennessee. A class of people, that access to homeownership, is most often out of reach. So, anyone that falls into the low to moderate income limit, have a need for housing, have the ability to repay a 20-30 year mortgage (maximum $350.00 month house payment), willing to help build their house or the home of others, willing to attend homeownership classes, learn skills in home management, make a $1450.00 down payment, agree to partner with Hawkins Habitat throughout the duration of their mortgage, agree to a criminal background check and a drug test, etc., can apply.

Was Habitat for Humanity Started by Jimmy Carter?

No. President Jimmy and First Lady Rosalynn Carter are long time supporters and partners with Habitat for Humanity. Their efforts have resulted in the construction of over 2,000 affordable houses being built!

Habitat for Humanity was started by Millard and Linda Fuller in Americus, GA., in 1973.

From that time and point Habitat for Humanity has built over 600,000 affordable, decent houses, around the world! Hawkins habitat for Humanity has built 34 of these with plans to continue building in the future.

How is it Organized?
Habitat for Humanity is a worldwide organization with auton-omous affiliates that serve communities all around the globe.

Both International and affiliates are controlled by a board of directors with elected officers.

International receives feedback from a board that that is made up of people from the local affiliates and the local affiliate receives feedback from the community it serves.

How is it Funded?

Habitat for Humanity is not an "arm" of the government. While we do compete for government grants to build affordable housing for low income people, we largely depend on the community for support and funding. This means that we accept donations from individuals, organizations, churches, businesses, etc. Hawkins Habitat for Humanity needs you and your support!

What Does Hawkins Habitat Need to be Successful?
First of all; Hawkins Habitat needs you! It needs your support, your experience, your ability, and your contribution.

We need land to build on. Anything from a lot to acreage. We have a dream of building a Habitat village!

We need donations of useable, resalable items, to sell in our yearly yard sales.

We need leadership, in areas of fundraising committee, establishing a direct mail strategy, marketing, event booths, increasing donors, etc.

We need volunteer workers, both skilled and non skilled.

We need donations of building supplies.

We need organizations willing to sponsor a house.

We need someone to search for and write grants.

We need office skills.

We need money donations.

Please help Hawkins Habitat for Humanity help others by your generous support in whatever way you can.

Give us call or email us if you have questions. Also call or email and talk with us about volunteering or donating. If no one answers the phone, leave a message and your call will be returned.
